Family and Legacy
To carry on their legacy and share the importance of education, Louis and Katie Raynor have five children who all value education and have used their gifts and talents to help others.
Mr. and Mrs. Patrick & Cassandra Simpson
Cassandra Raynor-Simpson is the oldest daughter of Louis and Katie Raynor. She is a graduate of the University of Mount Olive (formerly Mount Olive College) in Mount Olive, NC with two bachelor of science degrees in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Organizational Development, as well as Human Resource Development. Cassandra holds several work-related certifications from the workforce development and healthcare fields. She competed on the amateur bodybuilding circuit for several years, winning trophies for both the top place of her weight class, as well as overall in her weight class. Cassandra is also an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics; a portion of those profits go to The Louis and Katie Raynor Scholarship.
Patrick Simpson is the son of Patrick and Minnie Simpson of Greenwood, SC. Patrick is a graduate of Hobbton High School and completed his education at Sampson Community College. Patrick has vast experience in the industrial mechanic field, experience as a truck driver and a corrections officer. |
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry & Amanda Raynor
Jerry Raynor is currently the Director of the Financial Assistance Programs Division with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). He received his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University in Agricultural Business Management. Jerry is a member of the Senior Executive Service and has served Agriculture communities for over 36 years. Starting as a Student Trainee with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, he has held several positions in North Carolina, Maryland, Idaho, Indiana and the District of Columbia. Jerry has held several work and personal certifications and is an Ordained Deacon of his Church. As stewards of our natural resources, he believes in the essentials of teamwork, creativity, and leading by example.
Amanda Carter Raynor is the daughter-in-law of Louis and Katie Raynor. Amanda currently serves as the Market Vice President for Healogics, LLC. Amanda holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Shaw University in Business Administration, Master of Science in Business Administration from Strayer University and a 2nd Master’s degree, a Master of Business Law with an emphasis in Healthcare Compliance from the Wake Forest University School of Law. She has been serving in leadership roles since the age of 16, working in the career fields of restaurant management, entrepreneurship and the last 26 years in the healthcare industry. Amanda serves on professional healthcare leadership committees and has obtained several work certifications. Some of her personal interests and passions are personal development of women and helping the less fortunate. Amanda has dedicated over 15 years of services working with the youth and serving on community service projects in North Carolina, Texas, Maryland and Indiana. |
Dr. Tosha Diggs
Dr. Tosha Diggs is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Secondary Education and a minor in Sociology. She attended Wake Forest University and graduated with a Masters degree in School Counseling. Afterwards, she received degrees in Educational Leadership & Administration and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Early in her career she served as a high school counselor. She is also a graduate of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Leadership Greensboro Program and the Greensboro Education & Development Council's Challenge Greensboro for Minority Leaders Program. She has served as a school administrator in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. She moved to eastern North Carolina after being named principal of Heide Trask High School, then went on to become the Director of Secondary Education and an Assistant Superintendent for Craven County Schools. During her time in Craven County, she completed the Aspiring Superintendents Program and was the recipient of the Dr. Samuel Houston Leadership Award. She currently serves as the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Regional Director for the Piedmont-Triad.

Dr. Sharon Raynor
Sharon D. Raynor is the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Student Success and the Winnie Wood Endowed Professor of English and Digital Media at Elizabeth City State University. She is the Book Review Editor of the Oral History Review - a journal of the Oral History Association. She is the co-editor of Teaching Race in Perilous Times: Racial Discourse in the College Classroom ( SUNY Press 2021) Practicing Oral History with Military and War Veterans (Routledge Press 2022). She uses her various platforms to share veterans’ stories. Raynor is the Executive Producer for the documentary film, In the Face of Adversity: The Service and Legacy of African American WWII Veterans, for the North Carolina African American Veterans Lineage Day Documentary Project in collaboration with the NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, NC Museum of History and NC Humanities. The website www.whenwritinggoestowar.com highlights the culmination of her veterans oral history projects. She previously worked at East Carolina University, Johnson C. Smith University, Wake Forest University and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Raynor has degrees in English and Multicultural Literature (BA ’94, MA ‘96) from East Carolina University and a PhD in Literature and Criticism (‘03) from Indiana University of PA. She is the 2020 recipient of the Old North State Award from the NC Governor’s Office for her continuous work in the fields of education and veterans advocacy in the state of North Carolina.

Ms. Marquitta Mitchell
Marquitta Mitchell graduated from Hobbton High School as the Class of 2001's salutatorian and attended North Carolina State University, where she graduated in 2004 with Summa Cum Laude Honors and two Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Visual Art. She received her Master of Arts in English from National University in 2011. Since 2005, she has taught in North Carolina high schools and worked as a coach, teacher, tutor, and facilitator. She worked at West Mecklenburg High School (WMHS) in Charlotte, NC as a classroom teacher, Instructional Facilitator and Multi-Classroom Leader, as well as for TEACH Charlotte, as a part-time Seminar Instructor. After being at WMHS for 12 years, Marquitta joined the Office of Student Assignment and School Choice in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district as a Magnet Programs Specialist. She now supports the families of Mecklenburg County and helps connect students' interests to theme-based learning experiences. As a part of this work, she helps to market and contribute to more than 70 magnet schools through social media and email campaigns, large and small in-person events, virtual informational sessions, and parent support.

Ms. Amaris Raynor
Amaris Marla Raynor is the granddaughter of Louis and Katie Raynor. She is a graduate of Chowan University with a Bachelors Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Business Administration. Amaris earned the Trustee and Leadership Scholarship from Chowan University and participated in the Chowan University Choir and various community services projects in Murfreesboro. Upon graduation, Amaris moved to Suffolk, Virginia and is the Manager of Sentara Community Care in Norfolk, Virginia. Some of her special interests are fashion/interior design, involvement with church events and helping others. In 2021, Amaris earned a Masters degree in Human Services from Ashford University in California.
